What is it?
Switchable glass or smart glass is the name given to modern types of technology driven glass partitions, skylights and windows which add much more value to buildings than the traditional plate glass ones. These glasses change their light and heat transmitting properties or change from transparent to opaque at the application of electric currents- allowing the user to control the temperature and visibility in the building or room as well as giving privacy at the flick of a switch. This gives the user great options with minimal trouble.
Generally speaking, there are three different technologies that drive these changes in the glasses. They are -
- Electrochromic devices - These devices can change the amount of light that can go through a piece of smart glass by passing certain voltage of electricity through it. Once darkened, the current can be cut off and the darker tint of the glass will help filter the amount of light and heat going through. A mirror like reflective tint can also be given to glass with these devices.
